ご飯を食べるときにお箸をどのようにおきますか？。 まぁほとんどの人は置きやすいところ。という感じなんでしょうけど。 お箸は横向きに置くのが礼儀とされています。 横向きに置くのには理由があります。 お箸は日本国民にとって無くてはならないアイテムですが、武士道の精神と重なるものがありました。 食事をする時の箸はいわば武士でいうところの刀でした。 もしスプーンやフォークのように縦向きに箸を置いた場合、相手に刀をつきつけるという意味（喧嘩を売る）がありました。 「私はあなたの敵ではありませんよ」という意味をこめて横向きに置くのだそうです。

There is a reason behind this practice. Chopsticks are an indispensable item for the people of Japan and have parallels with the spirit of Bushido, the way of the samurai. The chopsticks used during meals can be likened to the swords used by samurai. If chopsticks were placed vertically, similar to a spoon or fork, it would imply threatening someone with a sword (picking a fight). By placing them horizontally, it conveys the message, "I am not your enemy."
